PCC Adoption Gathers Momentum: Streamline Your Project’s Meetings​

The community-wide shift to the LFX Project Control Center (PCC) is in full swing. Projects that have already migrated are reporting a massive reduction in administrative toil, specifically highlighting the time saved by self-service meeting scheduling. By taking direct control of their calendars, maintainers no longer need to open Service Desk tickets for routine updates, reclaiming valuable time to focus on their code and community.

For projects already utilizing PCC, we have released a new resource to help you fully automate your workflow. A new instructional video has been added to the CNCF Calendar page to ensure your community recordings are handled effortlessly.

GitHub Copilot Business Phase-Out​

We are sunsetting legacy GitHub Copilot Business licenses in early April, shortly after KubeCon Europe. Maintainers should transition to the Enterprise tier now to ensure continued access; instructions, more details on the transition, and the request procedure are available on the contributor blog.

Rolling out .project for Project Metadata​

Some of you already know about .project, but many don't.

tl;dr? A repo (.project) under your Project's GH Org that houses as much project metadata as possible that we feed into everything else (Landscape for example) -- Readme goes into more. That said....

Over the next couple of months, the projects team will be rolling this out to every project under the CNCF. Staff will be the ones bootstrapping each project’s repo to try and minimize the amount of work on maintainers. We hope this will actually minimize the amount of toil maintainers have with keeping data up to date and being able to own their own metadata all in one place.

As we move forward, we are working to simplify our infrastructure and billing. To that end, we will be phasing out all legacy GitHub Copilot Business licenses in early April 2026.

Why the transition?​

Historically, the CNCF provided Copilot Business seats to various contributors. However, our current partnership with GitHub focuses on the Enterprise tier, which offers an expanded feature set and is provided specifically for formal maintainers.

By sunsetting the legacy Business seats, we ensure we use our resources efficiently and that all maintainers have access to GitHub's highest-tier AI tools.

Enterprise vs. Business: What is the difference?​

GitHub Copilot Enterprise includes all the features of the Business plan, along with advanced capabilities designed to support larger-scale collaboration and deeper integration with your development environment.

How does this affect you?​

I already have an Enterprise license​

I already have an Enterprise license and a Business license​

If you are already using an Enterprise seat, you do not need to take any action. You may have noticed you were assigned both "Business" and "Enterprise" seats—in this case, the Enterprise license already takes precedence. When the Business seats are removed in April, your access will continue without interruption.

I only have a Business license (or no license at all)​

If you are currently relying on a Business seat provided by the CNCF, you must ensure you are transitioned to an Enterprise seat to avoid a lapse in access.

How to request your Enterprise seat​

If you are an eligible maintainer and have not yet moved to the Enterprise tier, please follow the formal request procedure outlined in our previous guide:

Docker Hardened Images are now free for projects​

Docker announced that they are making Docker Hardened Images free to all developers.

DHI provides maintainers of CNCF projects with secure, minimal, continuously maintained, base container images that reduce vulnerabilities and attack surfaces while fitting into existing workflows and improving supply-chain security overall.

Many CNCF projects can already be found in the DHI catalog, and giving the broader community access to secure, well-maintained building blocks helps us strengthen the software supply chain together.

CNCF Projects Calendar Migration: Move your project’s meetings to LFX PCC for Self-Service Scheduling​

As we head into 2026, we encourage any remaining projects to transition to the LFX Project Control Center (PCC) to take full advantage of our new self-service calendar system. With the legacy Google Calendar system now sunset, moving to PCC is the best way to ensure your community meetings remain visible and organized.

By switching to PCC, maintainers gain direct autonomy over their schedules, including:

• Automatic recording uploads to your project’s YouTube channel.
• Direct control via LFX, removing the need for Service Desk tickets for simple updates.

We are highlighting this update for the benefit of the CNCF maintainer community, as DHI can be used by CNCF projects as a secure and transparent foundation for shipping container images.

What are Docker Hardened Images?​

Docker Hardened Images are minimal, security-focused container base images designed to reduce inherited risk in downstream projects. They are built and maintained with security and transparency as defaults, featuring:

• Minimal attack surface: Only required components are included.
• Non-root execution: Images run as non-root by default.
• Supply Chain Security: Includes published SBOMs and SLSA Level 3 build provenance.
• Active Maintenance: Ongoing patching and rebuilds are performed as vulnerabilities are disclosed.
• Open Standards: All images are reproducible, open source, and licensed under Apache 2.0, making them compatible with CNCF governance and distribution models.

Benefits for CNCF Maintainers​

For CNCF project maintainers, using Docker Hardened Images can:

• Reduce Maintenance Burden: Lower the number of base-image CVEs maintainers must patch, freeing time for feature development.
• Operational Efficiency: Eliminate the need to maintain custom hardened base images.
• Improve Transparency: Build greater trust for downstream users.
• Consistent Baselines: Provide a well-maintained security baseline with minimal effort.

Key Benefits for Your Project​

Joining the DSOS program offers several high-impact advantages for project maintainership:

• Unlimited Image Pulls: Removes rate limits for your users on Docker Hub.
• "Sponsored OSS" Status: Gains a verified badge for greater trust and visibility.
• Advanced Security: Access to Docker Scout for vulnerability analysis and policy enforcement.
• Automated Workflows: Streamlined image builds directly from your source code.
• Insights: Access to Docker usage metrics and community engagement data.

Important Technical Considerations​

1. Transitioning to an Organization Account​

If your project currently publishes images under a personal Docker ID, you must convert it to an organization account.

• This conversion is free.
• A second Docker user account is required to act as the "Owner" of the organization.
• The email addresses for the organization and the owner account must be the same to ensure proper access control.

2. Paid Subscription Conflict​

DSOS and paid Docker subscriptions are mutually exclusive. If your project currently pays for a subscription, you must transition off that plan before you can join the DSOS program.

How to Apply​

Applications must be submitted via the CNCF ServiceDesk rather than directly to Docker. This workflow ensures the request comes from an official CNCF project and prioritizes the request with Docker.

What happens after approval?​

Once approved, benefits are granted at the project level for one year. Renewals are available as long as the project remains active, non-commercial, and continues to meet the eligibility criteria.

🕵️ Kusari Inspector free for projects​

We have another tool for our utility belt! To help us continue to improve shipping more secure projects faster, Kusari has graciously offered all CNCF projects their Inspector product free of charge! Inspector gives full visibility into versions, licenses, and security risks for direct and transitive dependencies.

🐳 Docker Hardened Images free for projects​

Today, Docker announced that they are making Docker Hardened Images free to all developers.

DHI provides maintainers of CNCF projects with secure, minimal, continuously maintained, base container images that reduce vulnerabilities and attack surfaces while fitting into existing workflows and improving supply-chain security overall.

Many CNCF projects can already be found in the DHI catalog, and giving the broader community access to secure, well-maintained building blocks helps us strengthen the software supply chain together.

📈 Telemetry collection and privacy guidelines​

The Linux Foundation maintains telemetry and privacy policies to help protect projects and their users. Projects are expected to follow these guidelines, and for CNCF-provided services staff also reviews third-party tools to ensure alignment before making them available to projects.

We've identified a small number of cases where third-party services may not yet fully align, and we'll be reaching out to work with those project teams to get that sorted. Our goal is to be supportive and collaborative, and to help maintainers ensure transparency, user trust, and alignment with community expectations.

As highlighted during the CNCF Maintainers Summit in Atlanta back in November, this offering is tailored to help reduce maintainer burnout by automating the repetitive parts of software development. This post outlines the specific features available to you, best practices for sustainable usage, and the step-by-step process to request access today.

What's Included in the Bundle?​

Eligible maintainers will receive access to the full Enterprise suite, which includes:

1. Copilot Coding Agent: This autonomous agent acts as a virtual pair programmer. You can assign it complex tasks—like "refactor this module to use the new API" or "fix the bug described in Issue cncf/contribute-site#402"—and it will attempt to implement the solution, allowing you to focus on high-level design.
2. Copilot Code Review: A massive time-saver for maintainers. This tool analyzes pull requests to identify bugs, suggest improvements, and ensure code consistency before a human reviewer even looks at the diff.
3. Contextual Chat: Ask questions about your specific project ("How does our retry logic handle 503 errors?") and receive answers grounded in your codebase and documentation.

Sustainable Innovation: Using "Auto Mode"​

With great power comes great resource consumption. Copilot Enterprise offers access to "heavy," high-parameter models that are computationally expensive.

To align with our community's values of sustainability, we strongly recommend using the Auto mode for model selection in your VS Code or IDE settings.

• How it works: Auto mode dynamically selects the most efficient model for your specific prompt. It uses lighter models for simple completions and reserves the heavy models for complex architectural queries.
• Benefit: This ensures you get the performance you need without unnecessary energy consumption.

Eligibility​

This benefit is strictly for official CNCF project maintainers.

• We validate eligibility against the official CNCF Maintainers list.
• Please ensure your project's MAINTAINERS.md or OWNERS file is up to date and reflects your current status before applying.

How to Apply​

We have streamlined the process through the CNCF Service Desk.

1. Visit the Service Desk: Navigate to https://servicedesk.cncf.io/.
2. Submit a Request: Select the Program Management category.
3. Provide Details: In your ticket, please provide your GitHub handle.
   • Optional: You may also include the GitHub handles of other maintainers on your project that you would like to enroll in the same request.

Activation: CNCF staff will verify your status against our maintainer records and provision the license. You will receive a notification once access is enabled.

New services since the last Maintainer Summit at KubeCon London​

GitHub Copilot​

We are excited to announce an expanded partnership with GitHub to provide free Copilot Enterprise licenses to CNCF project maintainers. This benefit is part of a limited pilot program and will be rolling out in the coming weeks. Eligibility will be validated against the list at maintainers.cncf.io, so please ensure your project's information is up to date.

Docker Sponsored Open Source Program​

Through the Docker Sponsored Open Source Program, project maintainers gain access to upgraded registry, security, and support services. These include unlimited Docker Hub image pulls, sponsored OSS status, Docker Scout for vulnerability analysis, automated image builds, usage metrics, and streamlined support. Request access via the Service Desk.

Akamai/Linode​

Akamai pledged $700K in cloud credits to the CNCF for project use. Projects can now request access to onboard Linode. This platform provides another alternative to Equinix which is due to sunset later this year. Oracle Cloud credits also continue to be available, particularly for AI workloads on ARM and bare metal deployments. Request access to either service via the Service Desk.

LFX Insights​

The latest version of Insights was launched at Open Source Summit in June. You can get deeper context on the health of your project by analyzing its velocity, contributor dependency, and organizational reliance. You can also add a badge to your repos, embed charts in your READMEs and presentations. If you see any data issues (such as new repos not onboarded or other missing data, you can open up issues on the Insights GitHub repo. Check it out!

LFX Project Control Center​

The CNCF has moved its community calendar to PCC which now enables maintainers to publish and update their own entries on the CNCF community calendar. This eliminates a project and staff bottleneck as entries were previously handled as Service Desk tickets. PCC also recently added an often-requested feature: the automatic upload of project meetings to the project's designated YouTube channel. Projects have control over any video changes before publication.

ask.cncf.io​

ask.cncf.io is an AI assistant built with Dosu designed to answer questions about the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) ecosystem, including projects, governance, events, and contributor information. This is not a general LLM chatbot. It only contains information from official repositories and documentation across the CNCF. Give it a try and come back often to see how it improves over time.

contribute.cncf.io​

We've relaunched the contribute.cncf.io site 🎉. This site serves as the primary place for maintainers to learn about what benefits they have as a CNCF project and helps expand our funnel of new maintainers for your projects. You can also submit pull requests to improve content.

Contributor Awards 2025

In previous years, the Kubernetes community recognized contributors who have gone above and beyond with the annual Kubernetes Contributor Awards. With the creation of a Maintainer Summit, we want to expand this to all graduated projects! All graduated projects will now be able to nominate contributors to receive a physical award, usually in the form of a square canvas print. Projects may only submit for awards once per calendar year. That means if a project submits for Maintainer Summit EU 2026, they cannot submit again for NA 2026.

Nominations
Graduated projects will be nominating individuals for the awards. Projects must submit nominations by August 15th! This is a way to highlight individuals who have had a major impact on your project and exemplify the values of our communities.

• Larger graduated projects with multiple SIGs are encouraged to nominate 2-3 people per SIG/WG
• Smaller graduated projects should target 2-3 nominees
• Here are the Ideas and Values Guidelines from Kubernetes that are useful in helping select nominees.

KubeCon NA Maintainer Summit T-Shirt Design
It’s time to flex that creative muscle! For this Maintainer Summit we want to solicit designs for our attendee t-shirts! Anyone eligible to attend the maintainer summit can submit art ideas, and the designs will be chosen by this summit’s program chairs.

Design submissions should follow these guidelines:

• Vector (svg) format. Inkscape is a free, open source tool that can be used to create vector graphics.
• Use 3 colors (5 max). The cost of printing increases with each color added. The fewer colors you use, the more affordable it will be for the community to have swag produced.
• The CNCF Code of Conduct applies. Submissions that do not follow the code of conduct will not be considered.
• No AI. AI-generated image content is not permitted in any form due to the likelihood of infringement. Do not use AI-generated imagery in any way in your design.

The deadline to submit is August 8th, and the winner will be chosen and informed August 12th.

We’re happy to announce that over 95% of CNCF projects are now onboarded to the LFX Insights v3 Beta!

Insights provides your project with more visibility into its community dynamics, particularly around contributors, organizations, issues, and pull request metrics. There are known issues with the data as it’s currently being loaded and analyzed, so dashboards aren’t yet fully accurate. The docs describe the current state of the Beta.

However, the LFX team would still like to connect with early adopters to get your feedback on how valuable the current types of reports are and what new or alternative dashboard views you’d like to see.

Jorge’s Tip o’ the Month​

Greetings maintainers! Each month I will strive to share some of the tips and tricks from our conversations together. We’ll keep them quick and easy!

Put contribute.cncf.io and other important information in your Slack channel’s toolbar! This helps maintain best practice over time and is a great reference, especially for new contributors.

I recommend mapping the resources similarly to your project’s README.md so that they present a consistent set of information between both landing pages. Calendars, roadmaps, YouTube videos, and anything else important. When was the last time you checked those resource links in your README? It might be time for a spring cleaning and set of updates. Invest in those onboarding ramps! Don’t forget to use the topic for CFP deadlines, it’s a handy way to keep a “community post it” at the top of the channel.

The Project Pavilion has been revamped! We have a new layout, quick access to caffeine, and the building’s most luxurious, comfortable break area. And it’s all for you! Here’s some important information:

Jorge Castro will be doing multiple daily walkthroughs of the Pavilion. This is so attendees can link up with a group of people and do a “tour” of the pavilion, similar to a zoo walkthrough. Have a coworker or boss who is at their first KubeCon? Let Jorge know, and he can do a walkthrough with them and give them a “lay of the land.” We hope to increase foot traffic into the Pavilion with each tour, so be ready when the tour drops by your booth!

Staff Access - The CNCF staff will be working out of the Pavilion. This is a great time to sync your project up with CNCF project services. The team is happy to discuss: Getting the most out of LFX Insights with your project Conformance Programs Training Programs Mentorship Programs Technical Writing Getting set up on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Anything related to your booth at KubeCon … and anything else on your mind, our job is to make KubeCon work for you!

Project Resources Website​

In collaboration with TAG-Contributor-Strategy, the CNCF is adding project/maintainer-specific content under https://contribute.cncf.io/resources/. This will contain helpful resources for maintainers and projects such as how-to guides, policies, and information around services the CNCF offers for projects.

Over the coming months, the goal is to provide a central point for projects to come and search for information and hopefully unblock themselves with common tasks or questions. If, as a maintainer, you find a repeated task that you do, PRs are welcome! Let’s build out a helpful collective together and uplevel all projects!

GitHub Copilot Availability​

We have a lot of awesome partners on our open source journey, and GitHub is one of them.

After a community member asked about enabling Copilot support (Thanks, Deepthi Sigireddi from Vitess!), we looked into it! As a pre-KubeCon EU treat, we have enabled it for all CNCF GitHub orgs under the CNCF GitHub Enterprise account. Tentatively, we have the following limits in place: Sandbox projects: 10 seats Incubating projects: 30 seats Graduated projects: 50 seats

This limit is subject to change as we watch adoption. We’ll let you know if that needs to happen.

🗃️ Resource Provider Mega Thread​

There’s a lot of news this month around resources provided to projects! Please read as your project may be impacted or could benefit from this news:

OCI Credits Now Available for Projects​

Oracle has kindly donated $3 million in OCI credits for CNCF projects. These credits are now available for all CNCF projects, and we encourage you to investigate adding OCI to your CI/CD pipelines. Check out this blog post for more information!

Equinix Updates​

The folks at Equinix have asked us to remind projects using their resources that they are bare metal! That means that any machines you have that sit idle, or even off, are still taking up resources and burning carbon for no reason. Equinix and CNCF Staff are double-checking that all the usage is valid and that resources are not stale/orphaned.

If you have an Equinix footprint, please take a few minutes and ensure the machines your project is using are what is needed. Doing so will also get you ahead of the game on the policy changes mentioned above. If you have any Equinix-specific questions or want help right-sizing machines, don’t hesitate to reach out to (equinix@cncf.io).

New Policy on Resource Usage​

To be good stewards of the resources donated to us by various providers, we CNCF folks need to change how we’re handing out and monitoring project usage of cloud/provider resources. To that end, we’ve written a policy around projects requesting and using compute resources.

TL;DR:​

CNCF will have hosted GHA Runners for you to use across all our major providers. If a provider/architecture/shape doesn’t exist, please contact CNCF staff, and we will add it. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, you should shape your CI to work within GitHub Actions. Resources just for CI/CD must be re-requested and approved by CNCF Staff. Non-ephemeral resources need to be re-requested every six months. At seven months, those resources are subject to deletion. This will go into effect in September 2024, with staff reaching out to projects over the coming months to discuss their usage and identify a path forward

Note from Jeefy: These changes are definitely a departure from how things have normally been handled, and it will also be a big lift from some projects. But we’ve also grown past what we can manage “the old way.” This gives us a much more sustainable model across the board. Thanks for helping us and your fellow projects out.

GitHub Action Runners​

The CNCF team has been working on supplementing the provided GitHub runners with hosted runners within our various providers. If your project is part of the CNCF’s GitHub Enterprise account, you should already have access to some. Example below:

To use these runners, see the syntax provided by GitHub and use the name of the runner provided (ex. equinix-4cpu-16gb). We will be adding different types of runners over the next few months. If you would like any specific shape, size, or vendor platform, please reach out to us in ServiceDesk and we’ll get it running ASAP!

Join the LFX Insights v3 Beta Pilot Program​

LFX is piloting a new tool for maintainers to learn about community growth trends and project velocity trends. Many early adopters have already boarded Insights, and we invite you to join them. Getting added to Insights is similar to configuring the DCO bot on your GitHub organization and activating it for one or more repos. Use Scarf to Measure Project Adoption​

Scarf is now available to CNCF projects to learn about the adoption patterns of their projects through anonymized usage metrics. The Linux Foundation has partnered with Scarf to provide projects with licenses for their entire team, as well as hands-on support from Scarf. Learn more about using Scarf here.

Participate in the CNCF Sustainability Survey to help shape the future of sustainability practices within cloud-native computing. Your input will contribute to developing environmentally conscious solutions in the CNCF ecosystem.

• Expanded ContribFest Space: We're delighted to announce that we're opening up additional ContribFest space! This expansion means more projects can now participate, fostering increased collaboration and showcasing a broader spectrum of initiatives.
• Lightning Talks Exclusively for Projects: In response to your feedback, we're introducing Lightning Talks tailored specifically for projects. This exciting addition replaces our working groups, providing a dedicated platform to effectively spotlight your updates and engage with the community.
• Ad-hoc Meeting Tables in the Sponsor Showcase: To facilitate more dynamic engagement, we're introducing ad-hoc meeting tables strategically placed in the Sponsor Showcase, adjacent to the Project Pavilion. These tables offer you the perfect space to connect with attendees spontaneously throughout the event, fostering organic discussions and collaborations.

📽️ Project Video Update at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon EU​

For KubeCon + CloudNativeCon EU, we will limit the project updates on the keynote stage exclusively to Graduated projects + Kubernetes SIGs.

Incubating projects will still be able to provide updates at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon EU on our new Lightning Talk stage with the option to provide live or pre-recorded updates.

All updates provided at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon EU will be showcased throughout the event on monitors displayed in our Project Pavilion.

Please submit your video and slide deck by Thursday, January 25, in order to be considered.

🍎 GitHub Actions: Now with Apple Silicon!​

In case you missed it, exciting news broke this fall regarding projects under the CNCF GitHub Enterprise License. Now, you should have access to the latest GitHub Action Runner type. Check out GitHub's fantastic blog announcement for detailed instructions on setup and more information.

In the upcoming months, native Linux ARM GitHub Action runners will be available. Keep an eye out for further updates!
